My bike has 12,222.9 miles on it. The last (only) valva adjustment was done at its 600 mile service, which I put off until 1200 miles or so. The bike still runs fine, but it's probably time to adjust them again. You can do them yourself if you have a couple 10mm wrenches, a flathead screwdriver, and a set of feeler gauges. I've got the specialized valve adjustment tools for older Japanese motorcycles, but regular tools work fine. Set them about mid-range of the specs if your feeler gauge will allow, as a bit loose is better than any amount too tight.
Happy tinkering.
